About Shared Journeys

Shared Journey is located in West Allis and in a instrumentality charter school of the West Allis/West Milwaukee School District, serving pregnant and parenting teens.

 

This high school charter provides a menu of educational as well as outreach and community support options to best meet the unique needs of each individual student.  Students are educated both in parenting and academics with potential  coursework including:  Child Development I and II, Careers, Social Aspects of Society, Prenatal Coursework, Independent Study, Cooperative Education and Employment and Compass Learning for on line general studies.  All the courses can be taken in a blended educational settting.

 

At Shared Journeys, the belief is that all students must be prepared to positively parent their own children and achive post secondary training in a chosen career.  This supports success in the 21st Century.

Mrs. Colla - Lead Teacher

 

Mrs. Colla has dedicated her career to helping students achieve personal and academic success. Mrs. Colla has taught in the West Allis/West Milwaukee School District since 1989.  She has taught grades 1, 2, 3 and high school.  In addition, she has been a reading teacher working with students at a variety of levels and in multiple settings.  Moreover, she is the founder and director of the Morgan Grove Family Center.  She has served on numerous committees and in leadership roles both at the district level as well as within the community.  Among her accomplishments she was a Kohl Fellowship Award recipient and Crystal Apple Grant and Award recipient.  She holds a B.S and M.S. in education, reading licensure and alternative education licensure. She enjoys spending time with her husband, four daughters, traveling, excercising and reading.

STUDENTS

Mrs. Goelz-School Social Worker/Teacher

 

Mrs. Goelz has worked in the field of Social Work for 13 years.  Before joining the Shared Journey's family, she had been working at Irving Elementary School in West Allis for the past 6 years.  In addition to being responsible for social work duties at Irving, Mrs. Goelz worked on several committees, fullfilled many leadership roles, as well as helped develop and teach Social Emotional Learning Curriculum to grades K5-5.  Her previous work included Juvenile Probation and a variety of different positions within The Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare.  Throughout her career, her positions have always included serving families and students by linking them with community resources in the Milwaukee area.  Mrs. Goelz is dedicated to assuring that students' basic needs are met so that they can reach their full learning potential and individual life goals.  She has her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Social Work, is a Certified Social Worker through DPI, and also holds a School Social Work Certificate.  Mrs. Goelz loves spending time with her family, which includes her husband and two young children.  She is very excited to be a part of Shared Journeys!  

Joan Delaney

 

For the past 40 + years, Joan Delaney has worked with West Allis-West Milwaukee students and parents in the role as  teacher, principal, coordinator and consultant, promoting opportunities for student success.    As educator, parent and grandparent, Mrs. Delaney is committed to seeing that learning barriers to teen and expectant parents are minimized and learning opportunities are maximized.  Mrs. Delaney feels privileged to work with Mrs. Colla and Ms. Goelz, the students and parents of Shared Journeys Charter school  to ensure that all students have access to the tools and resources needed to achieve the Shared Journeys Mission: “To provide expectant and school age parents an opportunity to complete a high school education, encouraging strong parenting, healthy lifestyles and building post-secondary skills through supportive community and innovative learning environments.”

 

Students are encouraged to investigate scholarships through a variety of sources.  Some of the best resources for scholarships include your parents' employers, your employer, churches and religious groups, fraternal and ethnic organizations, community service clubs, labor unions and industrial groups.
 
Many universities and colleges will offer scholarships to students based on academic merit, special talent, and/or financial need.  Students should access information from the financial aid or scholarship office at colleges of interest to learn about the scholarship requirements and process.
